The purpose of Bluetooth tracking devices is to find lost items like our wallets, keys, or even bags that the criminals have considerably misused, so much so that the tech giants Apple and Google will finally address this issue.
A new draft policy unveiled by Apple and Google jointly could prevent the misuse of unwanted tracking so that the victims can be quickly notified when they are tracked. In their coordinated press release, the tech giants said that these specifications would be compatible with detecting unauthorized tracking and getting announced on the respective platform of both Apple and Google. The other companies who have strongly supported this draft policy are Samsung, Pebblebee, Tile, Chipolo, and Eufy Security. They would design their respective devices with such inbuilt capabilities.
When the other companies join hands along with Apple and Google with the ability to get notifications of unwanted tracking, it will bring a holistic effort since the menace of Bluetooth tracking has been misused since its launch. There have been several reports of how criminals have been stalking individuals and also getting harassed, so much so that last year Eva Galperin the director of cybersecurity at the Electronic Frontier Foundation, did mention how she was alarmed even before the launch of the product.
Both Apple and Google have taken considerable measures so far in detecting Airtags that could be misused with several features added to the respective apps of its platform. The Android app is also compatible with Apple's Find My network, thus helping in the easy detection of item trackers. There isn't much doubt how much such Bluetooth trackers have helped their owners, too, but such a proactive measure by both the tech giants was much needed to cut down on the menace.
